Background of the Study
Gamification, the use of game design elements in non-game contexts, has become a popular tool in education, including nursing education, to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. In the context of nursing education, where students must acquire both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, gamification provides a unique opportunity to create an interactive, engaging, and motivating learning environment. Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, an institution known for its nursing education program, is increasingly exploring innovative teaching methods to improve student learning experiences and academic performance.
Gamification incorporates elements such as point systems, levels, badges, and leaderboards into educational activities, making learning more dynamic and enjoyable. This approach encourages active participation, enhances student motivation, and promotes healthy competition among students. By incorporating gamified elements into nursing education, students can engage more effectively with the learning material, retain knowledge longer, and develop a deeper understanding of complex clinical scenarios.
The use of gamification in nursing education has been found to enhance critical thinking, decision-making skills, and teamwork, which are essential competencies for nurses in clinical practice. Additionally, gamified learning can reduce anxiety, increase self-confidence, and provide immediate feedback to students, allowing them to track their progress and improve their performance. While gamification has shown promise in various educational fields, its application in nursing education, especially in Nigerian institutions, remains under-researched.
This study aims to assess the effectiveness of gamification techniques in teaching nursing students at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. By exploring students' perceptions of gamified learning experiences and evaluating the impact on their academic performance, this study will provide valuable insights into the potential benefits and challenges of using gamification in nursing education.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the growing interest in gamification as an innovative educational tool, its impact on nursing education in Nigeria, particularly at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, remains largely unexplored. Nursing education, which involves both theoretical and practical components, presents unique challenges, including maintaining student engagement, promoting active learning, and improving clinical competencies. Traditional teaching methods may not always effectively address these challenges, leading to disengaged students and suboptimal learning outcomes.
Gamification has the potential to overcome these limitations by creating a more interactive and enjoyable learning experience. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence on the effectiveness of gamification in nursing education in the Nigerian context. The absence of such data limits the ability to fully assess whether gamified teaching techniques can enhance students' engagement, motivation, and academic performance. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the use of gamification techniques in nursing education at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the effectiveness of gamification techniques in enhancing nursing students' learning experiences at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To assess the impact of gamified learning on students' academic performance and clinical skills development.
3. To identify the challenges and benefits of implementing gamification in nursing education.
Research Questions
1. How effective are gamification techniques in enhancing nursing students' learning experiences at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital?
2. What is the impact of gamified learning on nursing students' academic performance and clinical skills?
3. What are the challenges and benefits of implementing gamification in nursing education?
Research Hypotheses
1. There is a significant positive relationship between the use of gamification techniques and nursing students' engagement in learning.
2. Gamified learning techniques significantly improve nursing students' academic performance and clinical skills.
3. Students perceive gamification as a beneficial and enjoyable learning tool in nursing education.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students enrolled at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. It will evaluate the effectiveness of gamification techniques in the context of nursing education, considering factors such as student engagement, academic performance, and clinical skills. The study may be limited by the availability of gamified learning tools and resources, as well as the generalizability of the findings to other institutions. Additionally, the study's reliance on self-reported data may introduce bias.
